Qalou is a reading app of the world's proverbs in Tunisian Arabic, published by Monty. In short: there is no account, no advertising and no tracking, and we do not know who you are or what you read. The one thing the app reports, unless you turn it off, is which proverbs readers keep, as anonymous totals (see "Counting the proverbs readers keep" below).

What stays on your phone

Your collections, the place where you stopped reading, your settings (language, theme, text size), your answers to the daily question and the proverbs you marked "This one lands" are stored on your device only. They are never sent to us or to anyone else. The proverbs you keep also stay on your phone; only their numbers are counted, anonymously, as described below. If you delete the app, everything on the phone is deleted with it.

The book

The book is stored inside the app. The app works without a network, and it does not contact a server of ours to show you a proverb.

Counting the proverbs readers keep

By default, once a day, the app sends the numbers of the proverbs you kept or un-kept that day (for example R774) in one small message. It sends nothing else: no name, no identifier, no device information, no collections and not the place where you were reading. Nothing in the message tells us who sent it. We add the numbers to totals, so that the app can show which proverbs readers keep most. A proverb appears in that list only after readers have kept it at least 20 times, so one reader's choice is never visible.

The message goes to our server at api.qalou.app, hosted by Cloudflare. As with any web server, your IP address reaches it; we use it for a moment to limit abuse and we do not store it.

You can turn this off at any time in Settings ("Share what I keep, anonymously"). After that nothing is sent. Totals already counted cannot be taken back out, because they are not linked to you.

Buying the full book

The first chapters are free. The rest of the book is one purchase, handled by the App Store or Google Play. We receive no card, name or payment details from them.

To unlock the book on your devices, the app uses a service called RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc.). RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier made for your installation, the purchase receipt from the store, and the technical information any internet service receives, such as your IP address, the type of device and the app version. It uses them to confirm that the purchase is valid, to restore it when you press "Restore", and to show the right price for your country. It does not receive your name, your email, or anything you read or keep. We do not use this information to identify you and we do not sell it. RevenueCat may process this information in the United States or other countries. Its own policy is at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy

If you write to us

"Suggest a better line" opens your own email app with a message addressed to us. Nothing is sent unless you send it. If you do, we receive what you wrote and your email address, and we use them only to answer you. We keep the message only as long as needed for that.

Sharing a card

When you share a card, the picture is made on your phone and handed to the app you choose. We do not see it.

This website

This website is made of plain pages, with no cookies and no trackers. Like any web server, the company that hosts it (Cloudflare) may keep standard technical logs, such as the IP address and the time of a visit, for security.

Children

The app is not aimed at children. We do not collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Delete your data

Qalou has no account, so we hold no profile about you. What the app keeps is on your phone, and you remove it by deleting the app.

The anonymous keep totals are not linked to any person, so there is nothing to delete about you there. To ask us to delete data held about you (for example an email you sent us, or the anonymous purchase identifier held by RevenueCat), write to support@qalou.app with the subject "Qalou data deletion". If you bought the book, include the order number from your Google Play or Apple receipt, so we can find your anonymous identifier and ask RevenueCat to delete it. We answer within 30 days. Deleting data does not cancel a store purchase; refunds are handled by Google or Apple.

Your rights

You may ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, using the same address. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new date will be shown at the top of this page.
